The most famous story told about Saint Dunstan takes place in Mayfield, Sussex, where one day while Dunstan was at work in the forge, the Devil visited him in the disguise of a beautiful woman. When the Devil tried to tempt Dunstan, the saint spotted the Devil’s hooves peeking out under the woman’s dress, and grabbed the Devil by the nose with his red-hot tongs! The fiend changed back into his true shape, and flew off to Tunbridge Wells to cool his nose in the spring there.
