Cuthman was a true Sussex Saint, who lived as a shepherd until one day, he strapped his ailing mother into a wheelbarrow and set off to find a place to build a home and a church.
After some time, the barrow broke down, and the story goes that some men working the land laughed at poor Cuthman and his mum. He then proclaimed "Laugh man, weep heaven!" causing heavy rains to destroy the crop. It is said that to this day, there are certain fields near Steyning that are always rainy come harvest time.
When he came to Steyning, the barrow broke down a final time, and he decided this was the place to build his church. Halfway through construction, however, something went wrong and a critical beam became misaligned. Suddenly, a stranger appeared who was able to fix the problem so the building works could continue.
When Cuthman asked the stranger for his name, he replied: "I am he in whose name you are building this church."
Jesus was, after all, a carpenter.
