Kingley Vale in West Sussex is a unique nature reserve, comprising of an ancient yew forest and a ridge with prehistoric barrows and evidence of a settlement. I made two works based on the folklore of this amazing site:
This work is based on the folklore surrounding the yew forest under the hill. Some of the yews here might be the oldest ones in England and beyond! The woodland is said to be haunted by Viking warriors who fell here when their band of raiders was defeated by the people of Sussex in the 9th century.
The decorated capitals are inspired by an illuminated manuscript from a Carthusian monastery in the Low countries, and the depictions of vikings are all based on mediaeval imagery.
A4 sized mounted print, suitable for an 11” by 14” frame.
This illuminated print is gold-foiled to look and feel like the gold-leafed original.
